The DukeLIFE office is hiring several graders for The DukeLIFE office is hiring several graders for the ASCEND Program. ASCEND is a six-week virtual learning program that prepares incoming first-year students for success in Duke’s gateway STEM classes. Graders will provide feedback on math worksheets and also assist in introducing students to the Duke community.

Interested students can apply on JobX beginning mid-February. The priority deadline to apply is March 10th. If you have any questions, please contact ana.ramirez@duke.edu.
The Duke LIFE Office is hiring several ASCEND Coac The Duke LIFE Office is hiring several ASCEND Coaches to help us launch the ASCEND: a program for incoming first-generation first year students that helps them gain experience in STEM courses. ASCEND Coaches will lead teams of students, guiding them through the program and keeping them motivated and supported in completing course material. Coaches will also play a large role in welcoming students to Duke by helping them build community and learn about campus life.

Our next guest in our faculty connection series is Our next guest in our faculty connection series is Dr. Martin Smith.

As an Assistant Professor of the Practice of Education at Duke University, Dr. Martin P. Smith is a student first educator. Dr. Smith teaches Reflective Practice and School Leadership, Education 101: Foundations of American Education and his signature course, developed in 2016: Race, Power and Identity: From Ali to Kaepernick. He served as the Director of Duke’s Secondary Teacher Preparation Program and was the Faculty Director of the DukeEngage Boston Summer Literacy Program. He co-directed DukeImmerse India, accompanying undergraduate students to Pune, India where they observed Indian K-12 teachers and completed a miniature teaching practicum. As the co-director of the DukeImmerse Civil Rights Tour, he facilitated conversations on racial reconciliation, Afrocentric history and anti-racist work for preservice teachers; travelling with students to Greensboro, NC, Montgomery and Selma, AL and Atlanta, GA, where they visited museums, churches, and historical sites, and attended teacher trainings.

Dr. Smith first fused his passion for education and sport at the University of California at Berkeley, earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education while playing on the basketball team. At Berkeley, he won the 2006 Jake Gimbell Award which honors the student most committed to academic and athletic excellence.

Our first DukeLIFE Faculty Connection Series guest Our first DukeLIFE Faculty Connection Series guest is Dr. Nicki Washington. Dr. Washington is a professor of the practice of computer science and gender, sexuality, and feminist studies at Duke University and the author of Unapologetically Dope: Lessons for Black Women and Girls on Surviving and Thriving in the Tech Field. She is currently the director of the Cultural Competence in Computing (3C) Fellows program and the NSF-funded Alliance for Identity-Inclusive Computing Education (AiiCE).

She also serves as senior personnel for the NSF-funded Athena Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI). Her career in higher education began at Howard University as the first Black female faculty member in the Department of Computer Science.
 
Her professional experience also includes Winthrop University, The Aerospace Corporation, and IBM. She is a graduate of Johnson C. Smith University (B.S., ‘00) and North Carolina State University (M.S., ’02; Ph.D., ’05), becoming the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in computer science at the university and 2019 Computer Science Hall of Fame Inductee. She is a native of Durham, NC.

The event will take place at CMA’s La Casa + Patio, and catering will be from Panera.
