This is the first episode of a three-part series called Making It Out. Ari Miller (T’27), a current student speaks on her experience as an emancipated youth in Kansas and the disparities of the wealth culture at Duke University within the undergraduate population. We explore what it means to make it out of your circumstances to break generational cycles and attend college as a first-generation college student.

  • Ari Miller (she/her/hers) is a rural Kansas native and first-generation, low-income student at Duke University studying Public Policy. On campus, Ari has served as a Braver Angels Student Fellow and member of the POLIS Student Committee and currently serves on the executive board of Duke QuestBridge. She is engaged in independent research on what policymakers can do to create a unified system of support for transition-age youth as they enter adulthood from foster care, judicial emancipation, and the juvenile justice system. Ari plans to obtain a MSW and JD to pursue a career in reforming child welfare policy.
