ASCEND (Achieving Success through Community, Engagement, and Networking at Duke) is a six-week program that helps new DukeLIFE students build community, develop confidence, and make the most of their first year at Duke.
Through ASCEND, first-year students (Voyagers) are placed into small groups led by experienced student mentors (Navigators). Together, they explore campus, attend events, connect with faculty and administrators, and engage with the many resources and opportunities available at Duke.
The program helps students establish meaningful relationships early in their college careers while developing the skills needed to thrive both inside and outside the classroom. Throughout the six weeks, Navigators and Voyagers meet individually to discuss the transition to Duke, set goals for the first semester, and build strategies for academic and personal success.
ASCEND creates a strong sense of belonging from the very beginning of a student's Duke journey. By participating, students gain a built-in community that encourages exploration, connection, and engagement across campus. Voyagers leave the program better prepared to navigate academic expectations, communicate with faculty, and take advantage of the opportunities Duke has to offer.
